One Mother. One Night. One Child.

Arjun is only 18 months old. Still at the age where he should be toddling through his home, reaching for his mother’s hand. But one night, his mother Lakshmi wrapped him tightly against her side and stepped into the darkness to find water.

In their village in India, the nearest clean well belongs to a higher caste community. Families like theirs are forbidden from touching it. But Lakshmi and her baby were thirsty, and there was no one she could leave him with. So she carried him with her — hoping no one would notice, but someone did.

She was shouted at, humiliated, and beaten. And in the chaos, little Arjun’s leg was broken.

All because his mother tried to bring home a pot of water.

The Reality.

For many “untouchable” families in India — and for Haitian immigrant families living in the Dominican Republic — this is daily life. They are forced to collect water from stagnant ponds and unsafe sources used for washing clothes, preparing food, and watering livestock. That same contaminated water is mixed into baby formula, used for cooking, and consumed by entire families.

The result is devastating:

  • Waterborne disease

  • Skin infections

  • Malaria and other preventable illnesses

  • The heartbreaking loss of children and adults alike

You can make hope possible.

This World Water Day, we are working to fund 25 clean water wells in villages like Arjun’s — so no mother has to risk her child’s safety for something as basic as water. It costs $1,100 to drill one well, and no one has to do it alone. Every gift brings clean water closer.
